Davao's Corteza on a hot start

LEE Vann Corteza of Davao City and Warren Kiamco of Cebu opened the Philippines campaign in the Southeast Asian Games billiards event on a high note by winning their match Friday in the 9-ball doubles against a Thai pair.

Corteza-Kiamco booted out Thailand's Chatchawan Rutphae and Mana Upraphai, 9-6, to enter the semi-finals at the Nguyen Du gym in Ho Chi Mind, Vietnam.

Vietnam's Nguyen Phuc Long and Nguyen Thanh Nam crushed Tan Tiang Boon and Ang Boon Lay on Singapore, 9-5, in another match.

Malaysian bets Tan Kah Thiam and Ibrahim Amir also routed Al-Mudtadee Billah and Lim Tat Hwe of Brunei Darussalam, 9-2.

Vietnam and Malaysia join the Philippines in the next round where the Filipino cue artists have an edge with their vast international championship experience.

Corteza pocketed two gold medals in the 9-ball pool singles and team events in the 1999 Brunei SEA Games. He then took the 8-ball pool gold and 9-ball pool silver in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2001.

Kiamco also won previous in SEA Games and Asian competitions.

The 8-ball pool singles and English billiards doubles will start today where the country's top gun Efren `Bata' Reyes is entered.
