RP archers pocket gold in Seag By Marianne L. Saberon
AFTER failing to salvage a medal in the individual category, the Philippine lady archers bounced back by capturing the women's team gold, the first for the country in the 22nd Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The trio of Jennifer Chan, Jasmin Figueroa and Joann Tabaņag defeated the Malaysian team of Mon Redee Sut Txi, Fairuz Hanisah Binti and Shamani Ganesen, 218-211, in the finals at the National Training Center.
Indonesia bested Myanmar, 231-222, to settle for the bronze. Indonesia was bannered by women's individual gold medallist Rina Dewi Puspita Sari, Rusena Gelanteh and Suci Dwi Megasari.
The gold-medal output came on the heels of Florante Matan's bronze medal performance in the men's individual category and on the eve of the Game's opening rites.
The RP archers will go for a double kill after Matan, Marvin Cordero and Davao City-born Arnold Rojas topped the preliminary round of the men's team event with a total score of 3,855.
Matan tallied 1,296 while Cordero added 1,285. Rojas fired 1,274.
Indonesia came in second with 3,820 while Thailand earned 3,776 for third place. But it was not all good news for Team Philippines.
Over at the National Water Sports Palace, the RP men's water polo team succumbed to Thailand, 7-9, to suffer its second loss.
Solid Thai defense limited the Leo Galang-coached RP team to struggle early on the first set with only two points against four of that of Thailand. The latter rallied 3-1 in the second set.
The Filipinos blanked the Thais, 2-0, in the third set, but only managed to level the count at 2-2 in the final set.
In boxing, Florencio Ferrer Jr. and Christopher Camat survived their first-round opponents to keep RP's campaign flying at the Phan Dinh Phung Hall.
Ferrer beat Cambodian Sam Sokunthea in a referee-stopped-contest (RSC) in the up to 60 kgs. category while Camat downed Bui Phu Sau of Vietnam in a RSCH in the up to 75 kgs.
The RP lady booters drew with Indonesia, 1-1, late Thursday afternoon at the Lach Tray Stadium.
Meanwhile, RP National Woman Master (NWM) Cristine Rose Mariano outclassed Nur Shazwani Zulkafli of Myanmar in Round One of the women's rapid chess single at the Van Don Sports Center in Ho Chi Minh.
