60T OFWs to come home for yuletide season: Owwa
By Chistie Enriquez-Uayan

MORE than 60,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are expected to come home from December to January 2004, Overseas Workers Welfare Adminsitration (Owwa) chief Virgilio Angelo said Sunday.

Angelo said this is the reason why they decided to set up Owwa mini-offices in some of the country's busiest airports for the Holiday season, to provide assistance to balikbayans and their families.

"We call the program Handog Salubong and it will be celebrated from December 7 to 20 in 16 regions of the country," he said.

Angelo said anytime this month, the "Presidential Salubong" will take place where three lucky balikbayans will be greeted personally by President Arroyo and will receive special gifts from her.

To maximize the time spent by the OFWs here, Owwa and POEA will soon put up satellite offices in malls nationwide to assist them in obtaining the travel exit clearance.

Three offices will be set up in Metro Manila, two in Pampanga and one in Iloilo, Cebu and Davao.

He said OFWs may also avail of the E-card at the centers.

On Sunday, the OFW Family Day was held at the SM City Entertainment Plaza. The event served as the launching of the Handog Salubong program, an undertaking of the Owwa and the POEA.

Attended by hundreds of balikbayans, former OFWs and their families enjoyed various activities, like fun and games for the children, a raffle draw, songs from the Manila-based Owwa Chorale and a presentation by comedian singer and former OFW Norman Mitchell.
