Davao's Perez goes for gold in Seag By Marianne L. Saberon
LEE Vann Corteza of Davao City is all set to retain his Southeast Asian Games 8-ball pool singles gold after eliminating Sunday his semi-final opponent at the Half Nguyen Dy Gymnasium in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
The 24-year-old Corteza, whose family resides at the Green Meadows Subdivision in Mintal, beat Tey Choon Kiat of Singapore, 9-6.
Corteza was still playing for the gold as of presstime against Malaysian Ibrahim Amir, who demolished Vietnamese Hoang Dai Thien, 9-6, in the semis.
Corteza and Cebu City native Warren Kiamco pocketed the 9-ball pool doubles gold medal Friday night -- the first for the powerhouse cast RP billiards and snooker team that prides itself with the presence of world champions Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante.
RP bets Marlon Manalo and James Ortega yesterday bagged the bronze in snooker doubles that saw Singapore and Malaysia capture the gold and silver, respectively.
Over at the National Aquatic Sports Complex in Hanoi, Olympian diver Sheila Mae Perez of Davao City placed second adfter the semifinals of the women's 3-meter springboard event with a total of 210.75 points.
Perez of Km. 11, Sasa trailed behind Vietnamese Mai Thi Hai Yen, who amassed 214.26 points while another Vietnam bet Hoang Thanh Tra came third with 197.52.
Perez was set to dive for the coveted gold as of presstime.
She only settled for silver in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2001.
The country won its third gold courtesy of International Master (IM) Paragua who outclassed Singaporean Jason Goh Koon-Jong 1.5-0.5 in men's rapid chess single at the Van Don Sports Center.
Later, RP judoka Helen Endino Dawa delivered RP's fourth gold, winning the 45 kgs. division over Nwe Nwe Than of Myanmar.
