City now has a Chinatown
By Aurea A. Gerundio

* Davao City Chinatown is to be made up of R. Magsaysay, Monteverde and Sta. Ana Avenues, and Leon Garcia Street

THE City Council approved Tuesday the resolution to enact an ordinance declaring portions of Barangays 27-C and 30-C, where streets are mostly occupied by Filipino-Chinese with their respective businesses, as Davao City Chinatown and constituting the Davao City Chinatown Development Council (DCCDC).

Councilor Susan Isabel Reta, who proposed the resolution, believes that the declaration of Chinatown will encourage more foreign and local businessmen to visit the place and invest.

"In recognition of their (Filipino-Chinese) efforts and dedication to business, which help develop the economy of Davao City, it is fitting to declare the areas of Ramon Magsaysay Ave., Monteverde Ave., Sta. Ana Ave., and Leon Garcia St., as Chinatown," Reta said.

Included in the resolution is the creation of the DCCDC, which aims to assist in the active formulation and implementation of policies in an area that has great commercial, historical, economic and social significance to the Davao City.

Reta said the DCCDC shall be self-sustaining. "Its overhead expenditures shall be covered by its own funds, which may be taken from private and non-government organizations," Reta added.
