Diver Frabriga strikes again in SEA Games By Marianne L. Saberon
DAVAO City divers continued to make their mark for Team Philippines in the 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games as Ryan Rexel Fabriga struck for his second gold medal while his teammates added two bronzes Tuesday at the National Aquatic Sports Complex in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Fabriga, who clinched the gold in men's 10-meter platform Sunday, teamed up with fellow Dabawenyo 2001 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games bronze medallist Jaime Asok to capture the men's 10-meter platform synchronized gold.
Fabriga and Asok amassed 301.26 points for the feat while Indonesians Husaini Noor and Muhammad Nasrullah garnered 279.78 for the silver.
Sareerapat Pimsamsee and Suchart Pichi of Thailand settled for the bronze with a total of 272.25 points.
Olympian Zardo Domenios, who hails from Km. 13 in Panacan, zoomed to a bronze finish in men's three-meter springboard after a seventh-place standing in the semi-final round.
Domenios scored 558.03 points, trailing behind gold medallist Thais Pichi (656.91) and silver winner Meerit Insawang (570.18).
Domenios also got a bronze in the same event in Kuala Lumpur.
In women's three-meter springboard synchronized event, Dabawenyos Olympian Sheila Mae Perez and neophyte Ceseil Domenios bagged the bronze after registering 245.16 points.
Mai Thi Hai Yen and Hoang Thanh Tra of Vietnam got 262.98 for the gold while Malaysians Grace Junita Terry Pego and Leong Mun Yee took the silver with 246.48 points.
Perez earlier copped the silver in the three-meter springboard, the same medal she won in the category in 2001.
RP diving team manager and Davao City Swimming Association (DCSA) president Deedee Gonzales said Davao divers have performed impressively in the Games.
"We already have a total of two golds, one silver and two bronzes coming from five events. We are competing in one more event tomorrow (Thursday)," Gonzales said through a text message Tuesday.
She said Domenios and Niņo Carog would plunge into action Wednesday in the men's three-meter synchronized event.
"We expect a probable silver or bronze but if we get lucky we'll win the gold," Gonzales said.
