UDP to allot P98.8M for SM upland communities next year By Christie Enriquez-Uayan
UPLAND Development Programme (UDP) in Southern Mindanao has earmarked a total of P98.8 million next year to boost production of upland farmers in the region, national co-director Dashiel Indelible said.
"The projects we hope to implement are for various purposes, like soil and water conservation, marketing assistance, diversified farming, among others," Indelible said.
Proposed activities by the UDP in 2004 are 63 projects on soil and water conservation covering almost 900 hectares, 114 projects on diversified farming expanding to at least 6,000 hectares, 28 projects on marketing and enterprise facilities, 163 infrastructures, 650 trainings, and 85 research studies on resource management and sustainable agriculture.
Indelible said a total of P39 million is allocated for infrastructure projects, like water and irrigation systems, road access, foot trails and bridges, as well as erosion control that would benefit at least 44, 000 households.
Training programs for farmers, Indelible said, are expected to cost nearly P33 million, while the projects on diversified farming is estimated at P17.5 million.
UDP-initiated research and studies on sustainable agriculture and community as well as institutional development is allotted P4.2 million.
Indelible said the setting up of market and enterprise facilities that would assist about 4,200 households is apportioned P2.7 million, a little higher than the allocation for soil and water conservation activities reaching P2.4 million.
UDP European co-director Wiebe Van Rij said the organization aims to teach farmers proper resource management and income generation in the upland areas in Southern Mindanao.
It is present in six provinces, 35 municipalities, and 140 barangays in the region.
