Active Chess gets going

IT'S all systems go for the 2003 Youth Active Chess Championships at the Victoria Plaza Mall on Saturday and Sunday.

The event was originally set last weekend but organizers and the sponsor Philippine Sports Commision Region 11 but it was just early this week that organizers were able to finalize details.

Metro Davao Chess Association (MDCA) president Chito Dimakiling said: "Tuloy na tuloy na ang tournament this weekend. May working permit narin kami (Everything is all set for the competition. We already have a working permit)."

Dimakiling said a slight miscommunication between National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director Ronnie Tabudlong and PSC regional coordinator Vic Sai caused the delay of the chessfest.

"We are expecting about a hundred players in the tournament that features two categories," Dimakiling told Sun.Star Davao Wednesday.

He said the five-round Swiss System chess tournament is open to players 21 years old and below. Fourteen-below categories where each chesser will have 45 minutes to play.

Cash prizes are up for grabs in the two-day sporting meet. The 21-below champion will receive a cash prize of P3,000 and a trophy while the runner-up will get P2,000 and P1,000 will go to the third placer with medals.

Cash prizes of P2,000, P1,000 and P750 will go to the top three winners of the 14-below category.

Medals and certificates will also be awarded to the top lady, unrated and youngest chessers.

Registration is P100 for 21-below player and P50 for 14-below chesser. Inquiries may be coursed through cellphone numbers of Dimakiling (0919)-7449777 or Romy Parre¤o at (0916)-4461595. MLSM
