Davao divers unstoppable in Seag By Marianne L. Saberon
A SILVER medal finish by Davao City divers Zardo Domenios and Niņo Carog in the men's three-meter springboard synchronized event Wednesday ended the impressive stint of the six-member RP diving team in the 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the National Aquatic Sports Complex in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Sydney Olympian Domenios and Carog garnered a total of 277.44 points to place second behind Thailand bets Suchart Pichi and Meerit Insawang, who scored 292.26 for the coveted gold.
Indonesians Muhammad Nasrullah and Achmad sukran Jamjami took the bronze after tallying 252.9 points.
Team Philippines collected a total of two golds, two silvers and two bronzes in diving -- the best finish for the Dabawenyos since they first competed in the 1999 SEA Games in Brunei Darussalam.
RP diving team manager Deedee Gonzales said: "All the six divers from Davao got medals, nobody would be going home empty-handed. They really made a very good job."
Gonzales said she will leave for Manila together with the RP swimming team, but the divers will stay behind with Chinese coach Zhang Dehu and won't be leaving Hanoi until Monday.
"The divers are all happy with their performance here. They are planning to use their remaining days to go around Hanoi before they leave," Gonzales told Sun.Star Davao.
Gonzales said she gave a luncheon treat to the divers, saying, "it's a double celebration because it is also the birthday of Shiela."
Ryan Fabriga sizzled with two golds. He bagged the first gold in the men's 10-meter platform and the second one he shared with fellow Dabawenyo Jaime Asok in the 10-meter platform synchronized diving event.
Another Sydney Olympian, Sheila Mae Perez of Sasa and a So Kim Cheng Female Athlete of the Year awardee, pocketed a silver in the women's three-meter springboard and a bronze with Ceseil Domenios in the synchronized category.
Zardo earlier settled for the bronze in men's three-meter springboard. The divers are reportedly arriving in Davao to spend the holidays with their families here.
