Davao divers making grade

DAVAO City divers, who copped a total of two golds, two silvers and two bronzes in the recent 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam, are indeed a rare breed.

Sydney Olympians Zardo Domenios and Sheila Mae Perez along with Ryan Fabriga, Jaime Asok, Niņo Carog and Ceseil Domenios made Filipinos, especially Dabawenyos, proud of their sterling performances in the biennial sports spectacle.

But late-bloomer Ryan Fabriga shone the brightest with his two gold wins--one in men's 10-meter platform and the other one he shared with Niņo Carog in the 10-meter platform synchronized event.

The two golds were the very first in the history of the RP national diving team. Thus, Dabawenyos have a very good reason to be proud of our divers.

Domenios shared a silver with fellow 2001 SEA Games bronze winner Jaime Asok in the men's three-meter springboard synchronized diving. Domenios, a native of Panacan, settled for the bronze in the individual three-meter springboard.

Eighteen-year-old stunner Perez, who hails from Sasa, captured the women's three-meter springboard silver, then shared the synchronized bronze with Domenios' younger sister Ceseil.

Chinese coach Zhang Dehu, Filipino coaches Sandy Besas and Rommel Kong, together with team manager Deedee Gonzalez, also president of the Davao City Swimming Association, surely were a great help to the RP divers' campaign in Vietnam. MLS
