Decongest investments in urban areas: Serra
By Christie Enriquez-Uayan

TO ENCOURAGE equitable opportunities for wealth generation, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (DCCCII) Romeo Serra suggests that businessmen and government put up firms in all areas in the country.

"One thing that we could perhaps do is to decongest investments that are focused in urban centers. And we must work together to maintain peace and order in all parts of the country," Serra said.

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) in 2002 reported that 80 percent of the industries in Southern Mindanao are located in Davao region.

Another 85 percent of firms in Southern Mindanao that are engaged in services sector are found in Davao region.

National Statistics Office (NSO) 11 Virgilio Fusilero earlier said thousands of residents from the nearby provinces go to Davao City in search of better opportunities.

This, he said, results in higher unemployment rate and further contributes to the region's poverty incidence, especially if the migrants do not land decent jobs.

To illustrate the huge disparity of income between some cities and provinces, Chief Economic Development Specialist Noel Quiratman of the National Economic Development Authority said the country's financial district, Makati City, earns about P6 billion a year. Davao City, on the other hand, earns about P1 billion annually.

Davao City is home to 1.2 million Dabawenyos, while only 500,000 inhabit Makati City.
