Director's cut

DIRECTOR Jerry Lopez Sineneng has won the first best director award in the Asian TV Awards held in Singapore last Dec. 4 for the "Helmet" episode of "Maalaala Mo Kaya," a story of a woman afflicted with celebral palsy (played by Eula Valdez) who later becomes a burden to her siblings after their mother died.

"I didn't even hear my name being called," he says. "Philippines lang yung naririnig ko." It was only when the cameras started focusing on him when he realized he won, chosen by 65 sharp jurors from among respected directors from Singapore, China, Taiwan and United Kingdom.

Jerry is also the director of "Basta't Kasama Kita," where the love affair of Judy Ann Santos and Robin Padilla is said to have flourished. But he says, "Honestly, I don't think they're having an affair." Apparently, the rumors helped as the show is now the number one soap at ABS-CBN.

The script of Chris Martinez called "Bridal Shower" and directed by Jeffrey Jeturian is getting good reviews. Even though the Metro Manila Film Festival didn't choose this film to be in the top seven entries, critics claim it is definitely better than most of the other entries.

"We haven't laughed so loud while watching a local comedy and this film really succeeded in tickling our funny bone in satirizing women who are so desperate to have a man in their life," raves one film review critic. Dina, Francine, and Cherry Pie Picache will all be good contenders in the best actress award as they all render excellent performances in their roles as women desperately looking for Mr. Right and often finding him in the wrong places.

He added that there are many witty lines and hilarious situations, particularly a running gag about Dina Bonnevie meeting all her previous lovers, including a lesbian on a motorcycle who proclaims love to her.

Dina's suicide scene, especially one hospital scene, is touted to be a howler, debunking the notion of romantic love.

On the other hand, Miss Dina Bonnevie laughs at rumors that she fell in love with her leading man in "Bridal Shower," Christian Vasquez, while doing their love scenes.

"Cheap!" She exclaims. "The film is good, something we all can be proud of. So hindi na kailangan ang ganyang intriga to sell the movie."

As an ad exec who falls in love with a separated guy, Dina is pathetic in that scene where she fought hard just to get the bridal bouquet Francine Prieto tossed in her wedding. Dina went after the flowers in the belief that she'd be the one to tie the knot next. But Christian, who used her money to get his previous marriage annulled, only dumped her afterwards.

Director Jeffrey Jeturian says he's disappointed that their film was not chosen to open on Dec. 25. "I'm worried people might think it's not a good movie when everyone who has seen it tells me they like it," he says. "Kung sabagay, the annual filmfest naman is not really about good movies but about politics."

But Seiko Films producer Robbie Tan takes it more positively. "I look at it as a blessing in disguise because Christmas is for kid movies and, definitely, our film is not for children. It has a mature theme about single women today and their attitude about sex and marriage," he says. "Okay na sa akin that the movie is an opener for 2004. By that time, the students who are on holiday vacation will also be back and they're the ones in the best position to appreciate 'Bridal Shower,' which is a highly entertaining sex comedy.

"It will make you laugh, but at the same time, it will make you think seriously about personal relationships while the characters here ponder about their respective love life."
