Impit Purok spins tale and cool music
By Jojie Alcantara

HUNDREDS of years ago, a legend tells the story of the First Durian: of how it was concocted by Impit Purok, a hermit living in a cave up in Mount Apo.

It was for the king Barom-Mai (old and ugly, who lives in Calinan) to woo the love of his young beloved Madayaw Bayho (Dabawenyo for "beautiful face").

Upon Impit Purok's instructions, the ugly king planted a seed, and it grew and bore fruit of a sweet-smelling taste. It was round and smooth and fragrant. When the bride took the first taste, she immediately fell in love with her king husband.

Alas, upon the king's joy, he threw a big feast but forgot to invite Impit Purok as the guest of honor. So Impit cast a curse on fruit: that it will grow thorns all over its smooth body, and have the foulest odor imaginable.

And so grows the DURIAN, until today... (taken from The Story of the First Durian, by Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz, Why the Piña Has a Hundred Eyes and other Classical Philippine Folk Tales about Fruits)

Impit Purok recently opened in Matina Town Square, with Viva Hot babe Sheree as guest of honor, dancing at the bar and obliging with poses and autographs for adoring young male fans.

Adorned with the legendary fruit (original round and smooth objects placed all over the entrance façade and interiors) which resembled time capsules, the newly opened bar was a cross between a star trek enterprise cubicle and a neo-ethnic room with diverse wood panels woven and hanging from its ceiling. Outside, one can see the crowd within through its glass walls and green-lighted haze.

The music was a blast, brought from cebu by Andrei Ursal and Richard Taylor, bringing the crowd up on its toes the whole night. The cool hangout, owned by Jamer Lozano and managed by Vanni, attracted a mixed crowd of the young and yuppies that night. Cheers to an addition to the Matina Town Square entertainment plaza!
