Davao divers thank RRD for incentives By Marianne L. Saberon
DAVAO City divers were elated upon learning that Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will reward them with cash incentives for their feats in the 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam recently.
Duterte, through special assistant Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, said a cash bonus of P15,000 will go to the SEA Games gold medalist, P10,000 and P5,000 for the silver and bronze winners, respectively.
Silver medalist Sheila Mae Perez, also a veteran of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, said the incentives will surely help their families during the holidays. She thanked the City for the incentive, adding she had spent her money on the fare home.
Perez and her teammates took a ship home to ferry them from Manila to Cotabato City. Perez of Km. 11, Sasa was with double gold winner Rexel Ryan Fabriga and silver medalist Niņo Carog. They are expected to arrive in Cotabato on Tuesday, from where they will take a bus for Davao.
Their fellow-Dabawenyo divers Jaime Asok, Olympian Zardo Domenios and sister Ceseil of Panacan stayed behind in Manila with some members of their families.
Go said, "The incentives to be given by the Mayor is his way of recognizing the valuable contribution of the Davao athletes to the country's fourth-place finish in the SEA Games."
Billiards double gold medallist Lee Vann Corteza of Mintal, archery bronze medal winner Arnold Rojas along with water polo bronze medal performers Frazier Alamara and Monsuito Pelenio will receive cash incentives from the City.
Corteza, according to mother, Yvonne, will find a way to come home since he intends to join a competition slated in General Santos City on December 26.
President Arroyo, who received the Filipino athletes in a courtesy call in Malacaņang Friday, also promised to reward incentives to the medalists through the Philippine Sports Commission. But the bonuses may be released early next year yet.
