WMCC seek dads approval on moratorium bid By Aurea A. Gerundio
MEMBERS of the Watershed Management Coordinating Council (WMCC) visited the houses of Davao City councilors and sang Christmas carols, not to ask for material gifts, but to seek their support on the moratorium of plantations expansion in Talomo-Lipadas watershed areas.
The two-night caroling activity, which started Saturday, made use of the season to seek the councilors support to their campaign for the protection of watersheds against encroachment of chemical-based banana and pineapple plantations.
"We shall not ask for monetary gifts, but only your generosity to vote for the moratorium. This is a vote for the environment and the future of our children," WMCC President Victor Canizares said in a letter to the councilors.
Earlier, Councilor Beethoven Orcullo, who chairs the City Council committee on environment, postponed committee hearing with different organizations involved on the watershed to January 9.
"But the deferment did not hinder us from continuing our cause. We must continue the work because the alarming expansion of plantations in our watersheds did not bring to a halt despite the holidays," Javellana said.
Houses visited by carolers on Saturday include that of Councilors Orcullo, Emmanuel Galicia Sr., Nilo Abellera, and Victorio Advincula. On Sunday night, carolers will be visiting houses of Councilors Gerald Bangoy, Angela Librado, Salvador Caingles, Isidro Ungab, Teresita Maraņon and Shane Dolor.
