Davao spawning ground of RP's finest divers
WITH the success of Davao divers in the Southeast Asian Games (Seag) in Vietnam, there are talks that Davao City is fast becoming the breeding ground of such athletes whose graceful maneuvers on the air and delicate touches upon hitting the water make this Olympic sport a beauty to watch.
The Davao divers, young but oozing with talent, harvested two golds, two silvers and a bronze for the country in the biennial meet.
The divers' performance was impressive that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte gave them cash incentives upon their return to the City recently.
The RP diving squad includes Rexel Ryan Fabriga, Niņo Carog, Jaime Asok,
Sheila Mae Perez and Zardo and Cesil Domenios.
Fabriga hauled two gold medals in the Seag. After topping the 3-meter springboard, he teamed up with Carog to annex the synchronize diving gold.
Perez won a silver medal and so did Asok. Zardo also won a bronze medal.
With the outstanding performance by Davao divers in the SEAG, sports officials believe there will be more to come their way.
According to Deedee Gonzalez, the team's manager, with the discipline shown by her wards and with proper training these young boys and girls will reap more honors for the country in the future.
Gonzalez said Davao City divers will definitely lead the way in bagging more medals in future international competitions.
Gonzalez said there are nine members of the RP training pool who did not see action in the SEA Games. Two of them, she said, come from Davao.
"They are really excellent divers. They train hard and they have great discipline," said Gonzalez, who accompanied the divers during their Vietnam campaign.
