Guard becomes 89th execution victim
By Ben O. Tesiorna

A SECURITY guard joins 88 others summarily executed this year by unidentified gunmen thought to be members of the Davao Death Squad.

Edmund Gallardo, 32, married and a resident of Daliao, Toril, was on duty at the Aala compound in Ulas at around 10 pm Sunday when two unidentified gunmen approached him and shot him several times.

He is the 89th victim since January and the 58th since a noted upsurge in killings that started June 16.

The victim was rushed to the Davao Medical Center where he died while being operated. Gallardo sustained gunshot wounds to head, hands and legs.

Police recovered empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol from the crime scene.

A 14-year-old boy had witnessed the crime, said investigators.

The boy was said to be inside an L-300 van parked a few meters away from where Gallardo was sitting when the suspects killed him.

"Nakita niya dalawang tao ang lumapit at binaril ito. Akala nga raw nya mga kaibigan," said a police investigator.

Gallardo's employer said they earlier advised the victim to be on alert against thieves this holiday season. The employer said they did not expect that the guard would meet a violent death.

Authorities, however, could not confirm if the victim was involved in illegal drug activity or is included in the list of drug suspects.

Before Gallardo, 19-year old Panfilo Romeo, a watch-your-car boy, was also killed by unidentified gunmen inside the Redemptorist Church last December 23.
Romeo is said to be a member of a gang responsible for a series of gang clashes inside the church compound. with RCO
