ADB steps in to hasten SME dev't in Mindanao, Palawan By Chistie Enriquez-Uayan
TO fasttrack small and medium enterprise (SME) development, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has embarked on a technical assistance to enhance the capability of Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) in hastening private sector initiatives within Mindanao and Palawan.
Dubbed as ADB TA-3940, the undertaking is to culminate this April, ADB consultant Merly Cruz said on Saturday.
Starting last year, an ADB team conducted a study on local government units (LGU) and private sector initiatives to enhance the business atmosphere within Palawan and Mindanao, she said.
Pilot areas for the ADB assistance are the cities of Davao, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Cotabato, Zamboanga, and Puerto Princesa.
Cruz, who is also the regional Trade and Industry Chief, said the team's recommendations led to the creation of the Community Business Development Center (CBDC), where government services are sourced out to the private sector.
"Seeking the aid of business support organizations in delivering the services for SMEs is just one recommendation that we made," Cruz said.
Institutional development and strengthening initiatives include strengthening LGU and private sector partnership and enhancing the capability of SMED councils and SME centers.
Seeing graft and corruption in the government as a hindrance to business development, Cruz also said the team is pushing for its elimination, along with a reduced processing time for registration and licensing.
