City to greet Chinese New Year with 4-day fiesta
By Aurea A. Gerundio

IN PREPARATION for the Chinese New Year, the Filipino-Chinese community in Davao City will be holding a four-day festivity at the Magsaysay Park quadrangle starting Monday.

The "cultural affair" will feature Chinese culture and tradition to unite the Filipino-Chinese community and transcend cultural boundaries, said project coordinators.

Project coordinator Jimmy Go said several booths will be in place, and organizations and business enterprises have been invited to join the activity.

Angie Angliongto, another project coordinator, said Project Chinatown Incorporated (PCI) plans to put up a night market at the newly-declared Davao City Chinatown. Chinatown covers the areas of Ramon Magsaysay Ave., Monteverde Ave., Sta. Ana Ave. and Leon Garcia street.

"Kung papayagan ng City Government, we will put up a night market just like in Hongkong," Angliongto said.

On the other hand, Project Coordinator Amado O-So said the Filipino-Chinese community will lay away from the "traditional" lighting of firecrackers in greeting the new year as it is banned by the local government. "We'll just use drums and cymbals in lieu of firecrackers," O-So said. AAG

Peace and order

Meanwhile, PCI members have expressed confidence over the security guaranteed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) during the Chinese New Year celebration next week.

Go said there are already a series of consultations conducted with police to implement security measures during the festivity until Jan. 22.

Go said that worries of robbery and kidnapping threats against the Filipino-Chinese community have been lessened.

"The peace and order situation in the city is okay now. We are also confident that our police will secured us from kidnapping and robbery incidents," Go said.
