Laviņa to push for declaration of Mindanao IP elders' summit
DAVAO City Councilor Peter Laviņa on Thursday said he would file a resolution supporting the declaration of the first Mindanao Indigenous Peoples (IP) Elders' Summit.
The summit aims to create a sanctuary for the Badjao tribe within the shoreline of the ancestral domain of the Bagobo-Clata tribe--recognized by the IP Rights Act, said Laviņa, chair of the City Council committee on cultural communities and Muslim affairs.
The Badjao tribe suffers from marginalization, discrimination, and lack of living spaces, education, livelihood, and opportunities, said Laviņa.
"These issues should really be given attention by our local government," he added.
Environmental concerns
In another story, Councilor Beethoven Orcullo on Thursday said he is willing to work with Councilor Leonardo Avila III for Avila's proposals on environment and endangered specie protection and conservation in the city.
Avila earlier proposed a resolution urging the Save Davao Gulf Management Council to formulate a management plan on the protection and conservation of endangered species in the Davao Gulf following the beaching of a rare beaked whale at Matina Aplaya Tuesday last week. AAG
