Sarabia Cup mulled in DC By Marianne L. Saberon
WORKS are underway for the holding of the first Davao Sarabia Cup Memorial Tournament this year.
Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia, regional commissioner for softball and baseball associations, on Thursday said their family will map out plans for the inaugural staging of the meet this weekend.
"We are thinking of having a three-in-one tournament that features the little league baseball, juniors baseball and slow pitch open," Sarabia said.
He said getting at least four teams to participate in each category would be a good start for the program that aims to relive the legacy of his late father Judge Edipolo Sarabia.
The senior Sarabia was the prime mover of promoting baseball and softball not just in Davao City but also in the entire region since the late 50's.
Sarabia, also University of Mindanao's sports director, said, "We will finalize the details during our weekly family gathering by Saturday or Sunday."
Davao City Sports Council Inc. president Vic Sai said he is extending his full support to the project as he also recognizes the valuable contribution of the late Sarabia to the sports community.
"I've been waiting for the realization of the Sarabia Cup. I'm just waiting for Boy to give me a proposal so we can work on this together," Sai said.
Sarabia, for his part, welcomed Sai's commitment to ensure the success of the league seen to be institutionalized.
