4 Davao divers eye Athens slots
FOUR divers from Davao City will join the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece next month.
Southeast Asian (SEA) Games twin gold medalist Ryan Fabriga of Sasa said that two of their teammates will be missing action in the qualifying meet.
"Only four of us in the team will compete for slots in the Olympics," said 18-year-old Fabriga on Wednesday.
Zardo Domenios and Sheila Mae Perez, who both competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, will join Fabriga and Niņo Carog in February.
Fabriga said he is the only one competing in men's 10-meter platform, while
Domenios, Perez and Carog will see action in the springboard.
Fabriga, who swept the golds in 10-meter platform individual and 10-meter platform synchronized, said he aims to really make it in the Athens Olympics.
He said all four of them are undergoing rigid training at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex everyday.
Domenios and Perez were the first Dabawenyo athletes who figured in the Olympics. They were both given heroes' welcome in the city despite not winning any medal during their stint.
Domenios captured a bronze in the men's three-meter springboard, while Perez took a silver in springboard individual and a bronze in springboard synchronized in Vietnam last month.
Carog, on his part, won a silver in three-meter synchronized in the biennial Games.
Jaimes Asok and Ceseil Domenios are the two divers who won't be competing in Athens next month. MLS
