A COUPLE and their two children were burned to death while four other relatives living in the house on No. 72, Almond St., Phase 7, Ecoland Subdivision, Davao City, were able to save themselves from a 30-minute fire past midnight Saturday.

The dead were identified as Ruben Tan, 47, wife Perla, 45, children Jeffrey, 20, and Henry, 10. Their remains were brought to the Angel Funeral Parlor.

Fire Officer 1 Rodel Estolloso of the Talomo Fire Station said the Tan family died in the main room.

The four survivors were identified as Rosalina Reyes, son Renato Reyes, house owner Antonio Young, and Francia Tan.

Renato said the fire broke out in the kitchen at around 2 a.m. He said he immediately alerted the Tan family, who were staying in the other room. He added that the living room was hardly passable, prompting them to go back to their rooms. They then pushed out the air conditioner and passed through the small hole.

The survivors were treated for minor injuries at the Davao Medical Center.
Sr. Fire Officer 4 Romeo Denzo, chief investigator of the Davao City
Fire Office, said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.

"The point of origin of the fire was the stockroom situated at the center of the house," Denzo said, adding that they gathered evidence of electrical beddings.

The cost of damage was estimated at P1.5 million, he said.

Denzo said the firefighters were also able to recover cash from the scene of the accident and was subsequently turned over to the house owner.
