Nationwide kitefest kicks off in Davao By Marianne L. Saberon
CLOSE to 2,000 participants are joining the nationwide kick off in Davao of the 2004 Bear Brand Kitefest Sunday at the Agro football grounds.
Kites of all sizes and colors are expected to fly in the one-day event that offers over P160,000 in cash prizes, trophies and gift packs.
Organizers said they are positive that the Davao leg will surpass last year's record of 1,800 entries considering that more events and categories are entered this year.
Events organizer Leslie Noble recently said, "We are holding the nationwide kick off in Davao because of the strong support Bear Brand Kitefest had obtained here over the past years."
A family on-the-spot kite-making and kite-flying contest, for three immediate members, offers P10,000 to the winner. It is one of the innovations made by organizers.
The Theme Kite, Super Kite and Saranggola ni Bear Brand will also receive special prizes in the contest whose slogan is "Lipad, Pilipinas, Lipad!"
The kitefest features the elementary division for six to 12 years old (flat category), high school (flat category), college (flat, geometric and figure) and adults (flat, geometric and figure).
After the Davao edition, the kitefest will go to Dumaguete City on Feb. 22. It will also be held in Lingayen, General Santos City, Palawan, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Kalibo, Baguio City and Manila.
A photo essay contest is also featured for the media.
