Llanos dies at 59
FORMER Davao del Sur Governor Rogelio Llanos died Monday after a week of confinement at the San Pedro Hospital (SPH) due to serious illness.
Llanos, 59, reportedly died of leukemia.
The SPH administrator, however, refused to disclose details to reporters, saying they would like to respect the request of the Llanos family to keep everything private.
Llanos started his political career in 1988 when he was elected as mayor of Digos, which was then a municipality.
In 1992, he won as governor of the Davao del Sur and completed three terms until 2001.
After completing three terms, the eldest of Llanos, Reynerio, entered into politics and won as governor in 2001.
However, Reynerio succumbed to an illness in October last year and was replaced by then Vice Governor Benjamin Joseph Bautista.
Llanos was supposed to run again for the gubernatorial post in the May 10 elections against incumbent Governor Bautista.
"He is a great loss to the province of Davao del Sur. He is a sincere politician and a dedicated one," said Digos City Vice Mayor Joseph Peñas said.
Lakas-Kammpi, Llanos' party, is to meet this week to discuss Llanos' replacement in their slate. AAG
