Bayanihan's heritage in Davao performance
TAKING pictures during the show was strictly prohibited. In the first place, one had to be there to experience the rich cultural heritage that Bayanihan Dance Troupe brings.
Their show at the CAP Auditorium was dubbed as Transcending Borders, a rich repertoire of dance ensembles.
Transforming the CAP Auditorium last Feb. 7 into a veritable tapestry, Bayanihan Dance showcased traditional dances of our indigenous brothers.
Birds of Bright Plumage featured Kayasig, a hunting dance with simulating warfare movements of the tribes from the Cordilleras.
Banga-Salisid showed Kalinga women carrying jars on their heads performing a dance based on the ritual of fetching water.
Intramuros of Memory brought back memories of four centuries of our Hispanic past, which included Malaguella de Pila, the belle of the ball making her grand entrance pursued by caballeros.
Señoritas, young girls dancing the habanera, waltz and chotis enhanced by their flirty movements.
Mindanao Mosaic presented Kappagonor, an instrumental interlude highlighting the ancient manner of playing the Maranaw Kulintang accompanied by a gongand dabakan drum.
Vita-Singkil, Bayanihan's signature number featuring the Maranao Princess who is pursued by a prince amidst the clapping of crisscrossed bamboos in syncopated rhythm.
As the princess moves with precision and unconcern through the complicated perilous pattern, excitement mounts to a crashing finale.
Festival of Lights, a tribal tapestry symbolizes the lighting of candles, an ancient ceremony among highland tribes in Mindanao. Light in oil lamps in paper or wooden boats and rafts, perch on hands and head of dancers, swing from scarves or kerchiefs or flicker from bamboo poles.
Countryside images draws fond images of Philippine countryside as captured in recreations of bygone rituals as well as in sparkling dances of skill, frolic and delight.
The Bayanihan Dance Troupe's show was part of Philippine Women's University's 50th Golden Anniversary. Capping the evening's show was the presentation of the PWC Golden King and Queen and their entourage.
