Bird show attracting more visitors to Malagos Garden

THE country's first ever bird show has helped attract more visitors, mostly families, to Malagos Garden Resort especially during Sundays, owner Charita Puentespina said recently.

"More or less 100 people, usually children, ang pumupunta dito for the bird show alone every Sunday.

Usually yung mga schools pumupunta rin dito during weekdays," she said while held regularly every Sundays, bird shows may also be conducted on weekdays upon request by a group of 100.

Veterinarian and bird show director and producer Bopeep Puentespina said the show, which started in September 2002, is different from the other presentations due to being "very Filipino".

"Sa abroad, it's more on the behavior of birds lang but here, we have scientific training techniques and we try to project na ang birds pwede maging kaibigan lalo ng mga bata," he said.

The younger Puentespina also said that the show rates are way cheaper than those being charged overseas. He said by paying the P75 entrance fee for adults and P50 for children, one can already view the show.

In San Diego, bird show viewers are expected to shell out $22 while Singapore Zoo charges $16. He said unlike other zoos, Malagos Garden Resort also has a photo opportunities booth where visitors are asked to pose with the birds for a price of P60.

Brushing away fears, amid the bird flu scare, he also said the chances of avian virus transmission from the birds in Malagos to the audience is nil because the "actors and actresses" health has been well taken care of.

"Of course, kung may nagkasakit ng Avian flu at pumunta dito sa amin, hindi talaga maiiwasan yan. But yung migratory birds naman have difficulty reaching the Philippines because isolated tayo and these birds will have to travel for many days na baka before sila makarating dito me nangyari na sa kanila," he said in assuring the audience of a safe and entertaining bird show presentation.
