Aleonar still has fighting chance
MARCH McQueen Aleonar of Davao City finished only seventh among 29 participants in Sunday's 20-kilometer individual time trial (ITT) to keep his hope of joining the RP team alive.
This was bared Tuesday by Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba ng Dabaw (SSikad) chair Salvador Paholio Jr., who reported that the University of Mindanao rider Aleonar, also a mainstay of the Davao Pobre Bikers Association, clocked 32 minutes.
"I think Aleonar was already tired during the trial because he biked 60 kilometers going to the venue," Paholio said in the vernacular.
But the SSikad chief said he is still confident that the 17-year-old Aleonar can still qualify for the national team.
"Aleonar still has a better chance to make it because they will be acquiring the top eight riders of the entire selection process," Paholio said.
He said Aleonar will still compete in the massed start road race on Thursday then he will strut his staff in the track races at the Velodrome next week.
He said Aleonar and the other hopefuls started their break Tuesday.
Aleonar has swept junsen titles in local and regional competitions in the past. He recently copped the track race title in Kidapawan City.
Aleonar also clinched a silver medal and a bronze for Davao in the 3rd Mindanao Games in Mati, Davao Oriental last week. MLS
