DCity tankers outclass rivals in Davraa By Marianne L. Saberon
MATI, Davao Oriental -- PROVING that they are a strong force to reckon with, DAVAO City Durians tankers grabbed 16 of the 18 gold medals at stake in day one of the 2004 Davraa swimming competition.
The Durians garnered a total of 16 golds, six silvers and two bronzes at the Mati Centennial Sports Complex pool here late Tuesday afternoon.
Durians elementary boys copped five golds, one silver and one bronze to lead Davao Citys medal haul as the elementary girls team added four golds and three silvers.
Davao's boys secondary team had a 3-1-0 record, while the girls team held a 4-1-1 medal count.
Host Davao Oriental salvaged the two other golds in girls elementary and boys secondary categories.
Davao City bet Ronie Barani clocked 30.34 seconds in the elementary boys 50-meter freestyle gold, while teammate Domenico Venuti took the silver in 33.74 seconds.
Ma. Jessica Pineda also clinched the gold for Davao in the same event by registering 39.25 seconds followed by teammate Stephanie Decierdo (39.40) and
Panabo City's Ma. Patricia Borromeo (39.75).
Davao's top swimmer Junie Barani timed one minute and 1.88 seconds to grab the boys secondary 100-meter freestyle gold, while Danilo Miedes of Panabo finished in 1:02.25 for silver and Island Garden City of Samal's Sayre Sayer (1:03.39) took the bronze.
Another Davao tanker Analie Rodriguez shared the limelight in the girls event after her 1:12.19 gold medal performance.
Teammates Hussin Jimboy copped the boys' elementary 50-meter breastroke gold, while Julliani Rodriguez bagged the girls' secondary 200-meter backstroke gold.
Batang Pinoy Games back-to-back champion Jose Joaquin Gonzalez and cousin Anna Celina Gonzalez raised Davao's medal haul by annexing the golds in boys and girls elementary 100-meter butterfly.
Davao aces Kadel and Maribel Jawalde grabbed the boys and girls secondary 100-meter butterfly golds.
Davao also topped the boys' and girls' elementary and secondary 4X50 medley relay events and the boys' and girls' elementary 4X100 meter freestyle relays.
Meanwhile, Raymond Morales and Mary Cheennee Baylon saved the day for Davao Oriental with their gold finishes in 200-meter backstroke and 50-meter breast stroke, respectively.
Day 2 of the three-day swimfest was set late Wednesday afternoon.
Gymnastics
Meanwhile, Davao City gymnasts pulled off a very strong start for their title-defense by amassing eight gold medals, six silvers and six bronzes Wednesday.
Davao's Palarong Pambansa titlist Jessel Rose Anino captured three golds (floor exercise, beam balance and individual all-around) as teammates Jacklyn Demillo and Reyanne Talan settled for silvers and bronzes in all three events in girls' secondary.
Scoring 41.73 points, Davao grabbed the team championship while Davao del Norte tallied 30.28 for second and Davao del Sur was third with 26.92 points.
In the elementary division, Davao City bet Goidelyn Silva scored 8.13 to pocket the floor exercise gold, while teammates Angie Castañeros (6.80) and Genevieve Antoniano (7.63) performed for silver and bronze, respectively.
Castañeros returned later to clinch the golds in beam balance and individual all-around (IAA).
Antoniano placed second in beam balance then finished third in IAA while Silva was second in IAA but third in beam balance.
Davao City scored 43.05 for the team gold in the elementary division followed by Compostela Valley (26.52) and Davao del Norte (26.01).
Davao City Gymnastics Association president Mila Saceda said Wednesday that final official results in men's artistic gymnastics (MAG) will be announced soon pending the result of a protest.
She said the rhythmic sports gymnastics (RSG) will be held Thursday.
