Del Monte in early lead in PAL tourney
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Del Monte Golf Club, getting a scintillating performance from Romeo "Boboy" Jaraula, waxed hot on opening day of the 57th Philippine Airlines Interclub Men's tournament to grab a six-point lead in the championship division with an eye-popping 156.

Jaraula, a 35-year-old caddie, took advantage of his familiarity with the Del Monte course located in the mountains of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon to turn in the day's best score of seven-under 65 that was good for 43 points in the PAL modified scoring system.

Jaraula gunned down nine birdies against two bogeys for the day, and his teammates backed him up with equally solid rounds to lead by six points over Manila Southwoods, which also came up with an impressive showing at 150.

Lino Retuerto made 40, Joel Opaco 38 and Arsenio Mondilla were the other scores for Del Monte.

"It's a great start of us. We've been waiting for this kind of start since way back," Del Monte team captain Ramon Velez said of his wards' fine showing.

Canlubang, aiming for a fifth straight crown here and 13th overall, actually did not play bad scoring a 140, but Del Monte simply had too much firepower in the opening round.

Toru Nakashima paced Manila Southwoods with 39. He was supported by Michael Bibat (38), Manson So. Jr. (37) and Tonuts Asistio (36).

Boyet Zaragoza was the best performer for Canlubang, thus far with 39. Other scorers were Jay Bayron (36), Tommy Manotoc (33) and Joe Mari Hechanova (32).
