TOTAL taxes and fees collected by the Business Bureau in January this year posted a 14 percent increase as compared to same period last year, Business Bureau Chief Erwin Alaparaque said in an interview Thursday.

After hitting P129.9 million in 2003, the City was able to collect in January a total of P147.4 million, majority of which was obtained from business taxes.

A total of P117.7 million was earned from business taxes in January, higher than the P103.5 million collected in 2003.

Collection from permits and other regulatory fees amounted

P29.6 million this year, a 13 percent increase from last year's P26.3 million.

"This indicates the continuing confidence of the business sector in the local leadership and this translates that the reforms initiated in terms of streamlining the processes have also contributed to the increase," Alparaque said.

He said most notable was in sharp increase in the number of permits issued this January by 60 percent.

Records furnished by the Bureau showed a total of 7,062 firms were issued permits for the first month of this year, almost two times the 2003 figure pegged at 4,428.

Alparaque said some 600 new applicants also filed their documents before the Business Bureau as of February.

He said majority of the applicants are small and medium enterprises owned by local businessmen.

"Most of them come from other areas like Luzon and Visayas. Very few, siguro mga 20 to 30 percent of the applicants are foreign-owned firms," he said.

Majority of these establishments, Alparaque said, are either involved in food processing, manufacturing and services sector.
