Del Monte widens lead
CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Canlubang's hunt for a fifth straight crown is now in jeopardy. Del Monte is the main reason why.
Although there was no record-setting score this time, unlike the day before, Del Monte's 141 in the second round Thursday at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club was enough to widen its Championship Division lead in the 57th Philippine Airlines Interclub men's championship.
With a two-day total of 297 points, Del Monte, which is aiming for a first-ever Championship Division title, padded its lead to seven points over Manila Southwoods and a commanding 17 points up on the embattled defending champion Sweeties.
No less than the team captain himself, Ramon Velez, spearheaded the second-day scoring with a one-under 71 or 37 points in the PAL modified scoring system.
Backing him up were Louie Dacudao, who had a 36, Jett Plete, who made 35 and the 33 of either Ben Minoza or Tristan Tabanas.
Del Monte fired a record-setting 156 points on opening day, and with Manila Southwoods and Canlubang failing to gain headway, looks headed for a historic campaign in the event regarded as the unofficial national team championship.
Manila Southwoods shot 140 for a 290 total, while Canlubang, the pre-tournament favorite, could only match its first day score of 140 for 280, way, way behind the blistering home team.
"We played very well again," said a smiling Velez. "And we are going back to Del Monte with bigger leads."
He had reason to be confident. Action shifts back Friday to Del Monte Golf and Country Club in nearby Bukidnon where the host team made that fiery start Wednesday starring Romeo Jaraula's seven-under 65.
Mark Lopez and Gene Bondoc led Manila Southwoods with 37 points apiece while Artemio Murakami contributed 36 and Jeric Hechanova added 30.
Dave Hernandez paced Canlubang with an impressive 39 points, followed by Juvic Pagunsan with 38, J.R. Tanpinco with 32 and Ronnie Torrecampo 31.
Pueblo de Oro came up with 128 to wrest the Founders Division lead with a total of 254. Wack Wack had 252 to stay at second spot, while Forest Hills and Cebu Country Club shared third place with 246.
