Arroyo, Kabayan lead Ateneo mock elections

FPJ finishes fourth among students, last among faculty members and staff

President Arroyo - 1,629
Raul Roco - 741
Panfilo Lacson - 434
Fernando Poe Jr. - 137
Eddie Villanueva - 78

PRESIDENT Arroyo and running mate Noli "Kabayan" de Castro swept mock elections conducted among college students, administration, faculty and staff of the Ateneo de Davao University Friday.

Sources at the Ateneo student government, which conducted mock polls, said the President edged former Education secretary Raul Roco.

The results showed GMA led over Roco by more than 50 percent--a surprising development considering that students and intellectuals are presumed to be Roco's constituency.

Arroyo garnered 1,629 votes from the students sector, with Roco at a distant second with only 741 votes.

Panfilo Lacson came in third with 434 votes and actor Fernando Poe Jr. in fourth with 137. Religious leader Eddie Villanueva was last with 78 votes.

In the vice presidential race, Senator Noli de Castro leads with 1,606 votes. Loren Legarda came in second with 857 votes, Hermie Aquino came in third with 218 votes.

In the faculty and staff sector of AdDU, Arroyo was still the clear winner, with 137 votes followed by Roco with 77 votes. Lacson has 19 votes, Villanueva with 10 votes and last was Poe with 7 votes.

In the VP race, de Castro was first with 91 votes. Legarda was closely behind with 83 votes, and Aquino third with 36 votes.

The Ateneo Student Council conducted the mock election. More than 3,000 students and teachers participated.

Davao City 1st District Representative Prospero "Boy" Nograles, meanwhile, welcomed the mock election results, saying the result is a reflection of how Filipinos should vote in the May 10 elections.

"It shows that the school won't vote on basis of popularity [of a candidate], but on his programs, qualifications, competence and ability to handle the job," he said. BOT
