DENR to field entries for model barangays
By Aurea A. Gerundio

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 11 Tuesday bared the creation of a validating team to function as an endorsement body for every barangay as it intends to field in entries for the search for model barangays in the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act.

The validating team, which will be spearheaded by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the DENR, is composed of representatives from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), League of Cities, Municipalities and Barangays, environmental non-government organizations, the academe, church groups and business and civic organizations.

EMB 11 director Gregorio Estrada said the search on solid waste management at the barangay level was launched October last year under the partnership of the DENR and the DILG.

"This was aimed at encouraging the country's different barangays to comply with the ESWM plan, otherwise known as the Republic Act 9003, by assisting and monitoring the communities' progress in waste segregation to ensure the ESWM sustainability in the barangay level," Estrada said.

Estrada said there were already eight barangay entries up for validation. These include Poblacion Kaputian in the Island Garden City of Samal, Magugpo North in Tagum City, Poblacion in Maragusan, Calinan, Matina Aplaya, Paciano Bangoy, Matina Crossing and Fatima 24-C in Davao City.

Estrada said the awarding will be on June 4. One million pesos will be given to the first placer, P500,000 for the second placer, P250,000 for the third placer, P100,000 for fourth and P50,000 for the fifth placer. AAG
