Elected officials to submit drug test results By Aurea A. Gerundio
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) 11 Tuesday reminded elected officials in Davao City who have yet to submit drug test results to Comelec to comply with the requirement or face sanctions that may cause delay in assuming their respective post on July 1.
Election officer Jerry T. Mujal of the second district said the drug test for political candidates is mandatory and that Comelec will "strictly implement administrative sanctions against those who fail to comply."
"If ever they will still refuse or fail to submit their drug test results after June 30, we will notify the Comelec Manila office to decide on the matter," said Mujal, who was in Manila Tuesday to deliver copies of the election returns to Congress and the Comelec.
Mujal said he did not have on hand the list of those who have already submitted the drug test results.
But he said that re-elected Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is among those proclaimed winners Sunday night in Davao City who has yet to comply with the Comelec requirement.
Before the deadline of the submission of drug test results on March 24, records from the Comelec showed that almost half of the total number of local candidates had submitted drug test results.
Mujal earlier bared that among the incumbent public officials who have complied with the requirement are Vice Mayor Luis C. Bonguyan, Councilors R. Leonardo Avila III, Emmanuel D. Galicia Sr., Mabel Sunga-Acosta, Peter T. Lavi¤a, Bonifacio E. Militar, Danilo C. Dayanghirang, Gerald B. Bangoy, Jimmy G. Dureza, Liborio V. Lumain, Diosdado Angelo Mahipus Sr., Susan Isabel C. Reta, Beethoven L. Orcullo, Victorio S. Advincula Sr., Shane L. Dolor and Frances Mabel A. Laman.
The deadline of submission of the drug test results was on March 24, the start of the campaign period for local candidates.
Earlier reports showed Duterte is not against the mandatory requirement of the Comelec for political candidates to submit a drug test result, however, he described it as a silly requirement.
Duterte said he is not taking shabu or any prohibited drug, and that it would be unconstitutional for Comelec to force candidates to undergo drug tests.
