Davao to send juniors
ONLY Davao City's juniors team and not the age-group players can compete in coming national chess tournaments in Manila due to limited funds allocated by City Hall.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director Ronnie Tabudlong, in a phone interview yesterday, said the P40,000 budget given by the local government will only cover the expenses of three junior players excluding the 12 age-group bets and their coaches.
"Chito Dimakiling, Bebot Cruz and I decided to prioritize the participation of players John Ritter Bellocura, Rowela Acedo and Junre Salubre to the National Juniors Chess Championship on May 24 to 28.
But it is unfortunate that we could not send our 12 players to the National Age-Group Chess Championships on June 1 to 5," Tabudlong said.
The NCFP regional chief, however, said they are thankful for the city government's support.
"We are grateful that the city is doing its best to extend help to our players. We will still try to look for other funds to augment whatever remains of the P40,000 from the city so we can also compete in the age-group," Tabudlong said.
Tabudlong said P20,000 shall be enough for the juniors team but the remaining P20,000 cannot accommodate all age-group chessers Brene Parreño and Ma. Fe Serrano (under-18), siblings Chito Dimakiling II and Marie Angeli (under-16), Jerwell Andoy and May Micayabas (under-14), John Carl Aunso and Mary Israel Palero (under-12) and Danilo Engay Jr. and Dawn Grace Pacaña (under-10). Thus, the need for additional funds.
"I've already waived my slot as coach to give way to other players. I hope the parents of players can also help out to remedy the problem," Tabudlong said. MLS
