Boxing event seen to attract tourists By Raquel C. Bagnol
DAVAO's second congressional district chief of staff Gene Rose Ferrazzini said Panabo City is eyeing to rake in more revenue as people are predicted to flock to the city for the upcoming National Youth Open Female Amateur Boxing Championships.
"The national boxing championships open could well as a vehicle to promote Panabo as an agro-industrial city, and we are optimistic this major sports event will help attract tourists, boost the city' economy and lure investors," she said.
Ferrazzini said with invitations for the upcoming event, the government had attached brochures and guides/maps for the visitors and athletes.
"Nasa brochures na ang mga directions where to eat, where to buy what and other useful information about the city so not only will the government rake in profits but also private entrepreneurs," Ferrazzini said.
Ferrazzini also added that having the athlete's allowances in cash is advantageous to the city.
"They will have to spend for their meals and whatever they need. We expect a big delegation as this is a national affair, and the city government expects that this event will be a good exposure for future investments," she added.
The championships, organized by second district Rep. Antonio Floirendo's office and the Davao del Norte State College in Panabo will take place on May 23-29, 2004.
More than twenty boxing teams nationwide have already confirmed their participation in the championship, in which some 300 boxers will be seeing action.
