Tourist arrivals here up 10.85% in first quarter

FOREIGN and domestic tourist arrivals in Davao City rose to 125,002 during the first quarter this year, an increase of 10.85 percent over the 112,766 figure of the same period last year, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).

The monthly distribution of visitor arrivals indicated that domestic travelers comprised the bulk of visitors in January 2004, which accounted for a total of 83.59 percent or 104,494 visitors.

The figures, based on reports from 19 hotels, six inns and nine pension houses in Davao City showed that there was an increase in the arrival of Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during the first quarter of 2004, which numbered 7,345 or 5.88 percent compared to last year's figure of 5,647 during the same period.

The data from January to March 2004 showed a very slight decline in the number of foreign travelers. Those coming from East Asia topped the list with Japan' s 3,140, followed by China with 641, Korea 498, Taiwan 458, and Hong Kong 402.

Tourist arrivals from North America numbered 2,570 with the United States accounting for the bulk, which is 2,249 and Canada, 321.

Arrivals from Oceania numbered 446 visitors, of which 404 came from Australia and 42 came from New Zealand.

The Asean region accounted for only 716 visitors, which showed Singapore topping the list with 288, fllowed by Malaysia's 152, Indonesia 144, Thailand 99, Vietnam 19 and Brunei 14.

Arrivals from Europe totalled to 1,111, of which 466 travelers come from the United Kingdom, 176 came from Germany, 144 from Switzerland, 73 from Belgium, 62 from France, 40 from Sweden, 29 from Italy, 20 from Netherlands, 19 from Spain, 18 from Denmark, 14 from Austria, and two from Finland.

Of the total number of foreign visitors, 78 came from the Middle East particularly from Saudi Arabia while other foreign travelers of unspecified residences numbered to 3,014.
