DC's Luy makes waves in Cebu
By Marianne L. Saberon

MARY Ann Luy saved the day for Davao City by capturing the girls 16-under crown in the just-concluded 2004 Head Penn Tour Junior Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Cebu Country Club.

Luy, a Palarong Pambansa medalist, crushed Macy Solon of Dumaguete City, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals of their Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-sanctioned match.

The F. Bangoy National High School netter Luy also recently copped the girls 16-under title in the Bacolod leg after sweeping crowns in various editions of the Southern Mindanao Age-Group Tennis Championships.

Solon bounced back by defeating Eloisa Collo of Digos, 6-2, 6-2, in the 14-under finals. The latter did not go home empty-handed, however, as she pulled off a 7-5, 6-3 win against Sally Siso of Cebu for the 12-under title.

Fellow Dabawenyo Juan Paolo Cansino bowed to Ryan Casicas of Maco, Compostela Valley, 6-1, 2-6, 6-10, in the 10-under unisex.

Digos City bet Efren Macasinag subdued Bohol's Christopher Cañezo, 6-3, 6-4, for the boys 18-under title. But Macasinag lost the 16-under plum to Francis Largo of Bacolod, 5-7, 2-6.

Largo also took the 14-under crown after pulling off a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kennex Abadia of Cebu as Princeton Gerapusco of South Cotabato humbled Cadiz City's Jayvee Canoy, 7-5, 6-3.

Mati, Davao Oriental's Patricia Adaza downed Cebu player Reza Allesna, 7-5, 6-0, in the girl's 18-under titular showdown.

The next leg is slated May 24 to 30 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center where Ralph Kevin Barte leads the cast for Davao City in boy's 16-under and 18-under events.

Cansino is entered in 10-under unisex, Ernesto Pantua of Tupi in boy's 12-under and El Santo Santos of Tagum City in boy's 14-under.

Close to 200 netters have registered to join the Manila leg this early.
