Fare hike takes effect on June 12: LTFRB

DABAWENYOS are in for a series of price hikes this coming school opening.

Aside from the skyrocketing tuition in several schools and universities and the expensive books and school supplies, a P1.50 increase in public utility jeeps will also take effect come June 12.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 11 administrative officer Edgar Violan said their Board had just approved last May 25 the petition for a fare hike for bus and jeepneys.

Violan said the new rate for PUJ's will be from P4 to P5.50 for the first four kilometers. Additional P1 will then be charged for every kilometer thereafter.

For buses, there will be an increase of P2 for the first five kilometers then an additional P1.10 for every kilometer thereafter.

Violan said students, senior citizens and the differently-abled are still entitled to a 20 percent discount. He added that the Board also specifically ordered that children below 3 feet in height be spared from any fare and allotted a seat inside jeeps or buses.

"So ibig sabihin bawal na yung kandong sa sasakyan. Dapat pa-upuin talaga yung mga bata ng walang bayad," Violan said.

He advised operators to get their tariffs now since they could not implement the fare hike without their tariffs posted conspicuously inside their units.

Violan said they would be charging P520 "per case numbers" plus the certification fee of P50.

He advised the riding public not to pay the increased fare if there are no new tariff posted inside the jeep or bus. BOT
