Corteza eyes World Pool event

NEWLY-crowned San Miguel Asian 9-ball Tour Manila leg champion Lee Vann Corteza of Davao City now shifts his focus on the World Pool Championships after his startling upset of renowned Francisco "Django" Bustamante in their finals Sunday night.

Corteza, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao yesterday, said, "Gusto kong makapasok sa finals sa World Pool ngayong July sa Taipei. Sana papalarin akong umabot sa finals. Pag nagkataon iyon na ang pinakamagandang parangal sa akin (I really want to enter the World Pool finals. That would be my greatest achievement)."

The 25-year-old added he is very happy with his victory.

The three-time Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist Corteza, known by peers as Van-Van, said he never expected even making it to the finals against Bustamante.

"Sa simula palang ng tournament, hindi ko inisip na mananalo ako. Ang bilyards kasi, anybody's game (I haven't thought of winning since the meet started because I knew that it will be anybody's ballgame)," Corteza said.

Corteza said his morale was boosted after he eliminated Singapore leg titlist Efren "Bata" Reyes in the quarter-finals.

But his hunger for the title was only magnified when he demolished Korean Jeong Young Hwa in the semi-finals.

Corteza added, "Doon ko pa naisip na malapit na pala ako sa title kaya ibinigay ko na ang lahat sa laban. Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa Itaas sa biyayang binigay niya, hindi niya ako pinabayaan (That's the only time I thought the title was within reach so I really gave my best. I'm thankful to God for giving me this blessing and for not forsaking me)."

The eldest son of parents Engr. Edgar and Yvonne, Corteza said he is also eyeing a stint in the US Open. MLS
