Chinoy firecracker trader pleads guilty, fined P1T
By Raquel C. Bagnol

THE Filipino-Chinese businessman arrested for selling firecrackers in December last year pleaded guilty to the charges before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) and was fined P1,000 Tuesday.

With the assistance of his legal counsel Tito Sy, Johnny Go, owner of JGD Marketing at the corner Monteverde and Lizada Streets, Davao City admitted culpability of violating City Ordinance 060-02 of 2001 or the anti-firecracker ordinance and pleaded guilty before Judge Rufino Ferraris of MTCC Branch 7.

Go was arrested by elements of the Sta. Ana Police precinct at around 6:30 p.m. on December 24 last year after Davap City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who was doing the rounds of the city in the vicinity of Monteverde Street to check the implementation of the firecracker ban, heard an explosion.

Checking the source of the explosion, Duterte caught a child who just lit up a "triangle" (a type of firecracker) and pointed to JGD Marketing as its source.

Police authorities were also able to confiscate three plastic baskets filled with assorted firecrackers from Go's store.

Go was released on the morning of December 26, 2004 because according to Davao City Police Office (DCPO) chief Conrado Laza, they could be charged with arbitrary detention because charges had not been filed against Go as the City Prosecution Office (CPO) was then closed for the holidays.

In an earlier interview over radio station dxAB, Go said it was his wife who sold the firecrackers as she was not aware of the ban in the city.
