Nanay Soling pushes for housing for the poor
By Aurea A. Gerundio

OLD age is not stopping Nanay Soling from her mission to help poor Dabawenyos -- the same mission she has embarked on since her husband was governor of the undivided Davao and decades before Davao City even heard of his son, City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Tuesday, Soledad R. Duterte or Nanay Soling showed up at the City Council to ask for the councilors to pass a resolution urging for the release of a 10,000-hectare area in Marilog and Paquibato district for the squatters, jobless, rebel returnees and retirees in military service.

Nanay Soling requested the councilors to immediately act on the request believing the proposal would really be of big help to many homeless Dabawenyos.

In an interview with reporters, Nanay Soling said the proposal was introduced since the previous year, adding that she initiated such proposal without even asking favor from the mayor.

Nanay Soling is optimistic that the lumads in the area will not resent such project.

"As long as there are no problem with the Lumads, we can live with the Lumads," she said.

Nanay Soling said she chose the squatters, jobless, rebel returnees and the military retirees to be the beneficiaries of the project as these sectors are often "marginalized in the society."

Nanay Soling also believes that providing decent home to the homeless can be a better way to start addressing criminality in this city as the new breed of children will be prevented from staying on streets, where a lot of good and evil can be encountered.
