DAVAO City's problem on drainage, which has been the cause of flooding during heavy rains, can be resolved by putting up a "storm drainer" underneath the main streets.
This according to Engineer Ben Pedregosa, president of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers - Davao City Chapter, during the Kapihan sa PIA forum Saturday.
Pedregosa said a storm drainer is a big pipe, which will be installed underneath the streets towards the sea.
"Malaking pipe talaga 'yan na puwede magkasya ang truck. After installing the pipes, aayusin na ang kalsada above it. Kung uulan, lahat ng tubig eh sa ilalim ng kalsada pupunta at lalabas na sa dagat," he said.
Pedregosa said the project will be too costly but he believed this will best solve the problem with this city's drainage system.
"If we talk of budget for this project, it will cost billions," Pedregosa said.
Earlier, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said during his induction to office that he will prioritize the urban drainage and flood control project under his new mandate.
Duterte estimated around P250 million to correct 18 main drainage lines from Lizada, Toril to Sasa, which reportedly cause flooding to large low lying areas.
Duterte even said that, if needed, the city may embark on loan programs to be able to achieve his priority projects before his term ends in year 2007.
