FOUR boxers from the Barangay Una Boxing Program of Davao del Norte Second District Rep. Tonyboy Floirendo were recommended by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) for inclusion in the national training pool.
Rolando Omilla, Francis Cutamora, Charly Suarez and Cherelle Mae Grado were chosen by ABAP to be trained as national boxers.
These four athletes were discovered during the 2004 National Open Amateur Tournament held in Panabo City last May.
Cutamore is a gold medallist in that event, while Suarez and Grado got silver medals.
Omila was a bronze medal winner.
According to Manuel T. Lopez, president of ABAP and secretary general of the Federation of Asian Amateur Boxing Association, that "after careful deliberation, the national boxing pool coaching staff has recommended the inclusion (of the four pugs) to the national pool ob boxers based on their performance in the said National Open."
With the development, Gene Rose Ferrazini, Floirendo's chief of staff, said: "The boxing program of Barangay Una only validates everything we have done for the youth in District 2."
"The congressman is glad that we have not only succeeded in hosting the 2004 National Open Amateur Boxing, but we were able to show what these kids can do when it comes to boxing. However, the Congressman Floirendo is saddened to let these kids go," she added.
The Barangay Una Knock Out Droga Boxing program is Rep. Floirendo's flagship program in sports development that stated early last year.
