City is financially sound: treasurer
By Aurea A. Gerundio

WHILE the national government is reeling from a fiscal crisis, the same cannot be said of the city, City Treasurer's Office (CTO) in charge Rodrigo S. Riola said Thursday.

"We have enough collections of taxes from real properties and various businesses in this city," Riola said.

As of August, Riola said the CTO has already collected P1.4 billion worth of taxes.

He said the targetted collections for this year was pegged at P2.1 billion.

"We will do our best to break even with the target amount of collection. I think makaya naman. Although mahirap din minsan kasi may ilang businesses na delayed talaga ang payment of taxes," Riola said.

With regards to the P990-million loan proposal to the Land Bank of the Philippines, Riola said the city government of Davao has sufficient funds for repayment.

Riola said the loan capacity for this city is at P1.2 billion.

Still, they have to work hard to collect taxes especially because crisis situations cause delayed collections.

"Banat gyud mi sa (We work hard in the) collection of taxes everyday. We continue to send notices also to delinquent taxpayers and the inspection of various businesses for the permits," Riola said.
