Wow Wowie By Marianne L. Saberon
AT AGE 32, a woman is not expected to be as competitive in a sport as she had been in her younger years.
But Leonor "Wowie" Satorre is an exception.
Yes, the five-foot wonder Wowie proved them all wrong.
She powered the Davao City team of coach Melchor Anzures to the crown in the PFF 2004 SuperFerry National Senior Women's Championship in Marikina City.
As if that was not enough, Wowie also bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in that same event--her third MVP title since playing football way back in 1993.
Wowie, an AB degree holder at the University of the Immaculate Conception, took her first MVP award in 1998 during the International Football Jamboree 7-A-Side Tournament in Laguna where Davao emerged champion.
It was then followed up in 2000 with the 4th Laguna Cup 7-A-Side that was also ruled by Davao team.
Wowie was also named best striker in the 2000 1st Invitational Women's Championship in Manila and in the 2001 National Invitational Women's Championship in Davao City.
This talented daughter of Melquiades and Leonara Satorre has come a long way since her kickball years at UIC where she usually captained her squad to back-to-back championships.
I could still remember Wowie kicking the ball from the UIC Fr. Selga campus grounds to the fifth floor of the high school building.
But again that was history.
Wowie, whose favorite players David Beckham and Van Nistel Rooy, considers her stint in the 18th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and in the Asian Games the highlight of her football career.
She now extends her expertise to the SOS Children's Village football team as a coach.
With Wowie around, it won't be too hard for Davao to retain the championship next year.
