A fashion statement By Marissa S. Te Eng Fo
AND what a statement it was for Davao's elite and fashionable ones as siblings extraordinaire Popoy and Aztec Barba, with partner Dodgi Batu of Patahian, did it again! This time with Tribes of the East, Inc. designers Baby Maceda-Montemayor and former Miss Universe Margarita Moran-Floirendo.
Art Boncato, sales and marketing director of Marco Polo Davao called it "a high tea fashion" and of course my lovely people, the lobby of Davao's plush hotel, the Marco Polo was elegantly converted into a maze for our lovely mannequins cordoned off by off white flowing chiffons. First came the models all in black as they swayed and cat walk displaying the one-of-a-kind or as Margie says it all (made for individual) shawls and wraps. The beaded collar was an inspiration to all. What is the beaded collar anyway? It is something of a fashion statement my dear because one can use it as a collar, a belt or a neckwrap. The great part, it is beaded with freshwater pearls. So let's just say it is also a piece of jewelry. It is Mindanao inspired, as Baby Montemayor says "proudly Mindanao!"
Over two years ago, as five friends came together over dinner at the Montemayor's residence at the Insular Village enjoying the sumptious chicken dish in honor of two friends (Moi and Kiling Santos-Dakudao) visiting from New York, then and along with it a conversation that ended in fashion. It was the night that gave birth to Tribes of the East, Inc.
It is a company whose prime objective is to preserve the art and handicrafts of Mindanao passed on from generation to generation. No product comes alive unless it has passed thru the very watchful taste of Ms. Floirendo and Ms. Montemayor. The rest is history as we all say.
The second part of the fashion show was a knockout as Dodgi Batu with Popoy and Aztec Barba presented to the fashionable ones their fall forecast. Clothes in
flowing silk cloth and done in earth tones. As I looked at the mesmerized women and men ogling at those lovely models, who is to say if it was the dress or the one wearing it that made them look at the models that way? One thing's for sure, the sight was just lovely, just lovely!
Till next... ciao!!!
