Boni urges athletes to fight for country
By Marianne L. Saberon

"BE PROUD, fight and bring honor to the country."

These were the rallying words of City Hall officer-in-charge, Councilor Bonifacio Militar, as he sent off Davao City's contingent to the 4th Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games at the City Mayor's Office Monday morning.

Militar, representing Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, said, "Be proud that you are Filipinos. Fight for the country. I wish you luck. I pray you'll bring honor to our city and our country."

Militar made a roll call of Davao athletes and coaches who will join the rest of delegates from Tagum, Panabo, Koronadal, General Santos, Compostela Valley, Ozamis and Iligan competing under the banner of Mindanao-Philippines in the Games slated September 24 to 26 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Athletic coaches Emilio "Toto" Lacanaria and Belen Taala, swimming coaches Brigido "Jun" and Rose Rodriguez were present during the send-off attended by head of delegation, Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, and city sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go.

Track stars led by 3rd Bimp-Eaga Games triple gold medallist Roy Ocon and fellow champions Hobert King Adovo and Sharra Grace Tesaluna with Clent Tatoy, Nichelle Adovo, Edward Pascua, Janice Sinoy and Darelle Joie Sullano, swimmers Carlo Rodriguez and cousin Leah Julliani Rodriguez and sepak takraw player Grendel Ilogon were also present.

Two City Hall vans ferried the Davao delegation to the airport after the send-off.

They will proceed to the Philsports arena upon their arrival at the Naia domestic airport Monday afternoon to attend a PSC briefing and orientation.

Manila-based Davao tanker Corinna Denise Rosete is set to join the team at Philsports.

Acosta, however, will leave for Manila today to be with the Davao contingent prior to the RP delegation's departure tomorrow, Wednesday, via Malaysian Airlines.

The city government of Davao spent over P459,000 for the trip of Davao participants to help Team Mindanao-Philippines in its bid to keep the over-all title.
