'Ka Pipoy' still in Army's custody

NEW People's Army (NPA) leader Manuel Ramos, alias "Ka Pipoy", is still in the custody of the Army's 73rd Infantry Battalion based in Malagos, Baguio district.

This was the confirmation made by Lt. Col. Erick Parayno, chief of 73rd Infantry Battalion on Tuesday morning.

Parayno said "Ka Pipoy" is still undergoing "custodial debriefing" and would remain inside their camp until the process is over.

Last Monday, relatives of Ka Pipoy accompanied by members of human rights group Karapatan tried to visit the rebel leader at the Army camp but were prevented by the soldiers saying the suspect was already turned over to Task Force Davao (TFD).

Karapatan Southern Mindanao secretary general Ariel Casilao said Task Force Davao soldiers informed them that the captured rebel was not yet in their custody.

Casilao berated the soldiers for the "cat and mouse" game the authorities were playing on them.

He said this was a clear violation of rights of Ka Pipoy as a detainee.

Parayno, however, clarified that they had not yet turned over Ka Pipoy to TFD last Monday and was just escorted by his men to the City Prosecution Office for the filing of his sworn statement in relation to the robbery in band case against him.

"Ka Pipoy" was arrested by Army soldiers at his temporary residence in Purok 5, Sitio Malitbog, Barangay Nanyo, Pannabo City at around 4 p.m. of September 16 by virtue of a warrant of arrest for a string of atrocities against civilians in Marilog and Paquibato districts. (BOT)
